A teacher is charged with drunk driving after falling asleep

A 43-year-old coach and teacher in Cary was arrested and charged with both driving while intoxicated (DWI) and child abuse charges this past weekend.

Court records show that police found the man passed out behind the wheel of his running car in the early morning hours of Jan. 11. His car was parked in a space in the parking lot of the Sheetz gas station located at the intersection of Kit Creek Road and N.C. Highway 55 right around 1 a.m. Police found an unaged child in the rear seat of that vehicle as well.

Police found open alcohol containers strewn about the interior of the vehicle. Responding officers then startled the man awake. Court records reflect that the man had slurred speech. They also show that there was a heavy, distinct scent of alcohol on the man's breath when he opened the door to his vehicle.

Officers took the teacher into custody on suspicion of DWI and child abuse charges. Court records show that the man later tested as having a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .09%. This is higher than North Carolina's legal limit. It's unclear if the man has since been released on bail.

When individuals hear about drunk driving, they often think about someone who is stopped while driving erratically down the road or who is detained after a car crash. You can be charged with driving under the influence (DUI) simply for sitting in your vehicle intoxicated while the motor is running though. If you have a minor in your car at the time, this may result in you facing aggravated charges.

All crimes are serious and may result in you having to pay hefty fines or having to spend time in jail if you're convicted of them. Few result in you losing your driver's license though. Employers don't look too fondly upon individuals who have been convicted of a DWI. A conviction may result in you losing your job.

An attorney can help you come up with a strategy to mitigate the damage that you've done to your personal and professional life if you've been charged with such a crime here in Bolivia or elsewhere in North Carolina.
