A 43-year-old coach and teacher in Cary was arrested and charged with both driving while intoxicated (DWI) and child abuse charges this past weekend.
Court records show that police found the man passed out behind the wheel of his running car in the early morning hours of Jan. 11. His car was parked in a space in the parking lot of the Sheetz gas station located at the intersection of Kit Creek Road and N.C. Highway 55 right around 1 a.m. Police found an unaged child in the rear seat of that vehicle as well.
Police found open alcohol containers strewn about the interior of the vehicle. Responding officers then startled the man awake. Court records reflect that the man had slurred speech. They also show that there was a heavy, distinct scent of alcohol on the man’s breath when he opened the door to his vehicle.
Officers took the teacher into custody on suspicion of DWI and child abuse charges. Court records show that the man later tested as having a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .09%. This is higher than North Carolina’s legal limit. It’s unclear if the man has since been released on bail.
